The Benefits of a Healthier Lifestyle in Education

Learning institutions today are progressively adopting healthy habits. The responsibility of teaching students on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle does not solely fall only on parents. Teachers are also required to take on an active role as it can also help improve the learning process. A conducive learning environment is one that involves all the involved parties, i.e., parents and teachers, by sending students the same message both at home and in school, respectively.

Introducing students to healthy behaviors and activities should be a priority and not an afterthought. However, too often, most learning institutions lose out on the opportunity to instill healthy living habits in students. I strongly recommend that learning institutions should strive for a balance between helping students get a good education and encouraging them to become confident and competent members of society in the future. The best way to achieve this is by focusing on life skills, adopting a healthier lifestyle, and making the learning environment health conscious.

Students who attend a healthy conscious learning institution can learn about leading a healthy lifestyle and, in the long run, can make informed choices concerning their health, which can either positively or negatively affect their lives and those of their families. Current research has found that most students can grasp new concepts and retain more information about a particular subject when they are leading a healthy lifestyle by eating healthy meals.

These results have successfully been linked to improved students’ grades, better memory retention, longer attention spans, and faster processing of information. The primary reason for such results is that certain foods that are rich in protein, fiber, as well as acceptable fats such as yogurt, oatmeal, eggs, and apples that stay in the body for a more extended period. This, in turn, provides the body with adequate energy that is utilized to help you stay alert and focused throughout the day. Compared to asking for excel homework help, it does not take a lot of effort to create a healthier learning environment for students.

How Teachers Can Help Improve Students’ Health in School

As a teacher, it is justifiable that you would want the best for your students, both in and out of class. For most learning institutions worldwide, this includes the promotion of good learning habits and inspiring a strong work ethic. One of the most common ways students can attain both their personal and academic goals is through good health habits. It has been noted that students who are unhealthy often struggle academically, mentally, socially, and physically.

This, in turn, makes it significantly harder for such students to gain a sense of accomplishment, purpose, and fulfillment in several aspects of their lives. Therefore, regardless of whether you are a health instructor or physical education teacher, there are various ways you can integrate good health practices into your lessons to promote a healthier lifestyle among students. It will contribute significantly to the overall wellness and wellbeing of your students. Below is a list of how teachers can ensure their students are healthy and ready to learn:

  • Introducing healthy foods in the students’ daily diet
  • Explain the importance of physical, emotional, and mental health
  • Encourage the introduction of physical activities in the learning curriculum
  • Nurturing lasting relations with the community, i.e., local farmers, sports centers, libraries, etc.
  • Recruiting trained teachers and other support staff to promote a healthy lifestyle among students
  • Avoid offering sweets as rewards for excellent academic performance
  • Become a role model for your students
  • Include activity breaks in a classroom environment

Unfortunately, maintaining good health habits is a challenge for most students as you are likely to dedicate most of your time to studying and having not enough time to prepare healthy food. As such, frozen ready meals, such as pizzas, sandwiches, etc. have become part of their everyday diet, especially when in school. Understandably, not all students understand the benefits of adopting healthy eating habits concerning their academic progression.

However, with the help of the teachers, students have the opportunity to nurture good health habits early on in life, ensuring an improvement in academic progression with the added benefit of a healthier lifestyle in the future. As such, eating a balanced diet, participating in sporting events, and avoiding unhealthy foods, though a hard habit to maintain, will help you sustain a healthier lifestyle. Besides, it also benefits your mental, physical, and emotional health, which are all critical factors to excellent academic performance. Therefore, for your next meal, choose a healthier option, and enjoy the benefits.
