What are 5-axis kinematics?

5-axis kinematics is the study of the motion of a 5-axis machine tool. The five axes are typically three linear axes (X, Y, and Z) and two rotary axes (A and B). The rotary axes can be configured in a number of different ways, which is what gives rise to the different 5-axis kinematics.

Trunnion Table

The first combination is the table-table type which is commonly known as Trunnion Table. This type of machine is often found on smaller machines and is traditionally utilised to machine impellers, blades, and engine blocks. Trunnion table machines are a good choice for machining parts that require a lot of flexibility in tool orientation.

Swivel Head

The second type is the head-table or Swivel Head model, which can give a lot of flexibility from the rotary axis to handle workpieces, even if they are reasonably heavy. This method utilises the benefits of turning the piece to work as a lathe. Swivel head machines are a good choice for machining parts that are too large or heavy to be machined on a trunnion table machine.

Bi-Axis Head

The third type is the head-head or Bi-Axis Head type, which is best for handling much more substantial workpieces and when machining is required at different heights on a single workpiece. Bi-axis head machines are a good choice for machining very large or complex parts.

Choosing the Right 5-Axis Kinematics

  • The complexity of the parts you are machining: If you are machining complex parts with a lot of undercuts, you will need 5-axis kinematics that can provide a lot of flexibility in tool orientation.
  • The size of the parts you are machining: If you are machining large parts, you will need 5-axis kinematics that can provide a lot of travel.
  • If you need to machine parts with high accuracy, you will need 5-axis kinematics that are very precise.
